Innovation in Safe Families: Promoting Behavior Change in Bolivian Communities
Since 2019, Save the Children Bolivia has implemented Safe Families common approach in many municipalities and departments of the country. This invaluable experience has allowed us not only to identify challenges, but also to foster deep reflections that drive positive change in family and community dynamics. In this context, 2024 marks a milestone with the launch of the Lift Lab innovation project, aimed at strengthening behavioral change within Bolivian communities in relation to physical and humiliating punishment.
We elaborated a community behavior change guide which seeks to complement the Safe Families sessions, focusing on the community core (leaders, local authorities, activists, community groups, among others). The guide will support the “Component 3” of the common approach, articulating critical community processes, ranging from problem identification to concrete action.
The four key processes identified are fundamental to this initiative. Firstly, the identification of the central problem allows us to address the dynamics that perpetuate the cycle of violence against girls, boys and adolescents. Secondly, changing social perception about physical and humiliating punishment is vital, since these behaviors are often normalized within the culture. The third process focuses on social censorship of the naturalization of violence against girls, boys and adolescents, promoting an environment of respect and consideration for their rights. Finally, taking timely action through community protection plans and mechanisms is imperative to provide adequate and preventive responses to risk situations.
Common approaches can be innovated: innovation not only seeks a change in the way children are perceived and treated, but also empowers Bolivian communities to act effectively and responsibly.
Social transformation is a gradual process, and actions like these are essential to build a safer and more promising future for new generations, where respect and protection of children’s rights are the norm, not the exception. Community collaboration thus becomes a fundamental pillar for the success of this initiative.
