Digital activists in action

The Protected, Safe and Empowered: Changing the World Online and Offline (PROSEM) project has marked the beginning of an ambitious work. Led by a group of innovative teenagers committed to digital activism, these young people, aged between 12 and 18 years old are dedicated to creating materials, training and advocacy actions to promote and defend their rights in the digital sphere.

In the municipality of Sucre, 30 of these digital activists responded to the call of PROSEM, forming the first generation of «Digital Activists». Through an exhaustive process of strengthening digital skills, supported by global tools from Save the Children, these young people have acquired valuable training in digital citizenship with resources designed in collaboration with local partners.

In Sucre, the NGO “Realidades” (Realities) has been a key local organization for working with these young activists. With an inclusive and supportive approach, they have begun to implement concrete actions with different vulnerable populations, including migrant girls and boys, indigenous communities, people with disabilities and adolescents in conflict with the law. To reach these groups, they have developed initiatives in educational units located in peri-urban and rural districts, in addition to design, produce and share preventive content on social networks.

At the same time, activists participated in key forums and spaces for the development, monitoring and demanding local policies. Among the achievements, their contribution to the Intersectoral and Intergovernmental Strategy for the Prevention of Violence against Girls, Boys, Adolescents and Women stands out, as well as the Municipal and Departmental Plan for Children and Adolescents. Furthermore, its influence has extended to the Alternative Report of the Universal Periodic Review (EPU in spanish), presenting recommendations to the Plurinational State of Bolivia to the United Nations. These achievements demonstrate the commitment of young activists in the fight against barriers, such as digital gaps, the limited culture of online safety and various forms of digital violence.

The work of these activists not only highlights the ability of adolescents to be agents of change in their community, but also emphasizes the importance of their participation in decision-making spaces. With their dedication and vision, they are driving significant change, both in the digital world and beyond, becoming true leaders in building a safer and more inclusive future for all.
